On July 24 Benjamin Herman’s latest album ‘Café Solo’ was released in Japan. Some Japanese music magazines wrote good reviews about the album already. Read what they wrote on the pictures below.
Straight ahead standards with no gimmicks. Recorded thoroughly like sax is on left channel like Sonny Rollins trio album, and sounds very live. He always has expressed respect to traditions, but frankly enjoys putting it forward this time.
Benjamin Herman based in Holland is one of the top musicians in Europe who plays from jazz to dance, but this time he pursues sax sound with bass and drums. Sounds unbelievably vivid and fresh, which means that the recording engineer did a great job too.
With tight rhythms by two excellent musicians with sharp senses, Benjamin plays alto using his skills freely, but controls it wonderfully. He spins the melody with full of subtle ambiguities.
His performance impresses me with a skill that is quiet and restrained rather than obvious.
